Cam and engine builders often specify a break-in oil, procedure, and first drain. Follow those exactly and record what went in.
Cars that sit
Show cars and project cars may drive a few hundred miles a year. Change oil by time, keep fuel treated, and start the car on the schedule the builder recommends.
Products by equipment.
Confirm the lubricant type, grade, and specifications in each equipment manual before ordering.
Engine assembly and break-in
Use assembly lube on rebuilt engines and follow the engine builder’s break-in procedure and oil.

Frequently asked questions
Does my classic car need high-zinc oil?
Many flat-tappet engines do. Follow the cam or engine builder’s recommendation for zinc and phosphorus.
Can I use modern gear oil in an old transmission?
Use what the transmission maker or rebuilder lists. Some older units need a fluid that is safe for brass synchronizers.
