Cooling plants rely on pumps, motors, fans, and cooling tower gearboxes. Use the grease grade and oil type each maker specifies, watch for water contamination, and follow relubrication quantities to avoid over-greasing.
Pump and motor bearings
Match the NLGI grade, thickener, and relubrication quantity the motor and pump makers specify. Over-greasing motor bearings can raise temperature and damage windings.
Cooling tower fans and gearboxes
Tower gearboxes run in a wet environment and often call for an ISO industrial gear oil in a specific grade. A1’s catalog lists automotive and commercial gear lubes; confirm the gearbox maker’s grade and type before choosing any product.
Water is the main contaminant
Cooling towers expose bearings and gearboxes to moisture. Check oil for water, keep breathers and seals in good condition, and sample gearbox oil periodically.
Chillers are a separate specialty
Chiller compressors use refrigerant-compatible oils specified by the chiller maker. Follow the chiller service provider’s requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What grease goes in a cooling tower fan bearing?
The grease the bearing or fan maker specifies, often a water-resistant type.
How often should cooling tower gearbox oil be changed?
At the gearbox maker’s interval, with oil checks for water between changes.
Can I over-grease an electric motor?
Yes. Follow the motor maker’s quantity and interval, and purge as directed.
