Harley-Davidson oil change: oils, filters, and kits

Match your Harley-Davidson model and engine to the correct oil, filter, and kit, and check whether primary and transmission service need separate supplies.

By Jeff Pittman, Independent AMSOIL Dealer · Updated

Short answer

Start with the exact model year, model, and engine, then identify the lubrication compartments and service requirements in its manual. An engine oil-change kit is not automatically a complete primary and transmission service kit. Verify every included part and fluid before ordering.

Identify the motorcycle before selecting a kit

Record the full model designation and engine, not just “Harley” or “Sportster.” Similar names across different generations can describe different engines and lubrication arrangements. Use the manual and fitment lookup for your exact motorcycle.

Check engine-oil viscosity, service-fill quantity, filter part number, drain seal, and the specified level-check method. Do not copy a fill amount from another motorcycle or assume every bottle in a kit must be installed.

Map engine, primary, and transmission requirements

Many Big Twin applications have separately serviced engine, primary, and transmission compartments. Other designs differ: Harley’s 2007 manual, for example, describes a combined transmission and primary chaincase lubricant service for its Sportster models. That example does not establish the procedure for later motorcycles carrying a similar name.

Write a fluid specification, capacity, interval, and seal requirement for each compartment your manual identifies. Wet-clutch requirements matter. A dedicated transmission lubricant should not be placed into a shared clutch compartment unless its application documentation explicitly allows it.

Read the contents and fitment of an oil-change kit

The AMSOIL HDCK listing checked October 8, 2026 contains four quarts of MCV 20W-50 V-Twin oil, a chrome EaOM134C filter, and a drain-plug O-ring. Use its detailed fitment listing and motorcycle lookup; the four-quart package is not a universal engine-fill instruction.

Compare the included filter, oil, and seal against your exact application. Other kits have different quantities or filters. Do not assume a kit includes enough fluid and hardware for a complete engine, primary, and transmission service.

Prepare for a model-specific service

Have the required service instructions, tools, seals, drain container, and a stable way to support the motorcycle. Follow the specified hot or cold level check and motorcycle position; these details affect the reading.

Use the manual’s tightening values and keep oil away from tires and brakes. After service, perform the specified level and leak checks. If you cannot safely support the motorcycle or identify the correct drain points, use a qualified motorcycle technician.

Buy by the verified application and keep a record

Use the motorcycle lookup and compare the kit with individually purchased oil, filter, and any required primary or transmission fluid. Check the current product application information for each compartment before choosing among the examples below.

Record the service date, mileage, oil and filter codes, and work completed for each compartment. Follow the motorcycle’s scheduled and special-use maintenance instructions. Harley-Davidson names identify applications; they do not imply endorsement of this independent dealership.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Harley-Davidson use the same oil-change kit?

No. Match the year, model, engine, required oil, filter, seals, and quantity. Check the kit’s detailed application list before buying.

Does an engine oil change include primary and transmission service?

Not automatically. Check which compartments your motorcycle has and ask the shop or kit supplier exactly what is included.

Should I pour in every quart from the kit?

No. Use the manual’s service-fill and final level-check procedure. Package contents are a purchasing quantity, not an instruction to overfill.
