Choosing an oil filter for synthetic oil

Choose an oil filter by vehicle fitment, construction requirements, and service interval, then compare compatible products in the filter catalog.

By Jeff Pittman, Independent AMSOIL Dealer · Updated

Short answer

Choose the filter specified for your exact engine and the intended service interval. “Synthetic oil” does not identify a filter size, bypass setting, or part number. Verify the application before comparing filter media or advertised life.

Start with the exact engine and part number

Look up year, make, model, and engine, including any production-date or engine-code notes. A filter that screws onto the mounting stud is not necessarily the correct filter. Cartridge dimensions and cap-seal placement also depend on the housing.

Record the full part number rather than relying on a photograph or the first letters of a product family. Compare a cross-reference with the manufacturer’s current application listing before ordering.

Compare features after confirming fitment

The correct filter must work with the engine’s flow and pressure requirements. Depending on the design, relevant details include gasket dimensions, bypass-valve requirements, anti-drainback provisions, and cartridge seals. Some of these functions are in the engine or housing instead of the replaceable element.

Media descriptions and particle-efficiency claims are useful only with their test conditions and particle size. Do not rank two filters from an unexplained “micron rating” alone. For most buyers, confirmed fitment and an appropriate service rating are the first decisions.

Coordinate the filter and oil change intervals

AMSOIL distinguishes service guidance for EaO and Ea15K filter designations and for the oil used with them. Check the exact filter listing and application notes rather than applying one family’s maximum life to every filter.

A filter rated for longer use does not extend the oil’s service life. Likewise, a long-drain oil does not extend a shorter-rated filter. Plan around the applicable vehicle, oil, and filter limits; follow any application-specific exceptions.

Prepare the parts needed for installation

Check which seals come with a cartridge and whether the drain plug needs a separate washer or replacement part. Have the proper cap socket or removal tool and the manufacturer’s tightening instructions before draining the oil.

For spin-on filters, confirm the previous sealing gasket came off with the old filter. For cartridges, install each seal in its specified groove. Follow the vehicle’s final level and leak checks. Do not reuse a filter simply because it looks clean from the outside.

Build a short list of compatible choices

Use the vehicle lookup first, then search our oil-filter catalog by the verified part number. The catalog contains AMSOIL and other filter brands; availability of a brand does not establish that it has an application for your engine.

If two choices fit, compare the documented service limits, included seals, package price, and your planned interval. Save the chosen code with your maintenance record so the next order starts from verified information.

Frequently asked questions

Does synthetic motor oil require synthetic filter media?

Use a filter approved for the engine and intended interval. Motor-oil base type alone does not specify the filter media or the replacement part.

Can I install a bigger filter for longer life?

Do not substitute on size alone. AMSOIL’s FAQ directs buyers to the recommended application rather than an unlisted larger filter.

Can one filter cover two oil changes?

Do not assume that it can. Follow the vehicle and exact filter guidance, including any requirement to replace the filter when changing the oil.
