Short answer
Calcium sulfonate grease, usually calcium sulfonate complex, is thickened by fine calcium carbonate crystals formed from an overbased calcium sulfonate. That thickener gives the grease built-in load-carrying, rust-protection and water-resistance characteristics before any extra additives are added. It is common in marine, mining, steel, food and wet off-highway applications.
How the thickener works
Calcium sulfonates are long used as detergents and rust inhibitors in lubricants. In this grease type, an overbased calcium sulfonate is converted during manufacture so that its calcium carbonate content forms a crystalline structure, often described as calcite, which thickens the oil. Complexing agents are added to raise the dropping point and improve stability.
Because the thickener itself contributes extreme-pressure and anti-rust behavior, calcium sulfonate greases can reach load and corrosion targets that other thickeners meet only with added chemistry.
Where it is used
Typical applications include boat trailer wheel bearings and boat lifts, mining and quarry equipment, steel mill bearings, paper machines, equipment that is pressure-washed, and food plant machinery when the grease is formulated and registered for incidental food contact. These are places where water, heavy loads or shock loads are routine.
Trade-offs to know
Calcium sulfonate greases often have a high thickener content, which can make them firmer at low temperatures and less suitable for some high-speed bearings or electric motor bearings designed around another grease. Their inherent extreme-pressure character is a reason to check motor or bearing maker guidance before using one where EP grease is not wanted.
Compatibility with lithium complex greases is a known concern. Published compatibility testing has rated some lithium complex and calcium sulfonate blends poorly, so purge thoroughly when switching and watch the first relubrication intervals.
Reading the data sheet
Look for the thickener named as calcium sulfonate complex, the NLGI grade, base oil viscosity, dropping point, water washout and water spray-off results, salt-spray or rust tests, four-ball EP results and any listed approvals such as NSF H1 for food-grade versions.
Frequently asked questions
Is calcium sulfonate better than lithium complex?
Neither is better in general. Calcium sulfonate is often chosen for wet and heavily loaded service, while lithium complex is a broad general-purpose choice. Follow the equipment maker’s recommendation.
Can calcium sulfonate grease be mixed with lithium grease?
Mixing is not recommended without compatibility data. Purge the old grease as fully as practical when changing thickener types.
