Short answer

DFS 93K222 and DFS 93K223 are Detroit Fluid Specifications for engine oil, issued when API introduced the CK-4 and FA-4 categories. 93K222 covers CK-4 oils and 93K223 covers FA-4 oils, while the earlier 93K218 covered CJ-4. Detroit publishes approved-oil lists for each, and newer GHG-era Detroit engines are factory filled with 93K223 oil.

Detroit’s fluid specification system

Detroit, part of Daimler Truck North America, issues numbered Detroit Fluid Specifications (DFS) for oils, coolants and other fluids. An oil must be tested and listed by Detroit to appear on a DFS approved list.

The engine oil requirements and approved lists apply to Detroit on-highway engines including the DD13, DD15 and DD16, as well as older Series 60 and MBE engines, as described in Detroit’s lubricant requirements publication.

93K222 for CK-4 oils

DFS 93K222 was issued for API CK-4 oils, which replaced CJ-4 as the industry standard in 2016. CK-4 oils are backward compatible in most older diesel applications, and Detroit’s 93K222 list is the reference for engines that call for it.

Detroit has said oils meeting 93K222 or 93K223 may provide opportunities to extend drain intervals compared with older oils, subject to its published service guidance.

93K223 for FA-4 oils

DFS 93K223 covers API FA-4 oils, the lower-HTHS category aimed at fuel economy. Detroit chose to factory fill its GHG-era engines with 93K223 oil, which made Detroit one of the more visible adopters of FA-4.

FA-4 is not suitable for every engine. Check whether your engine’s documentation allows 93K223 before using it in older Detroit engines.

Checking a product

Detroit maintains approved lists for 93K218, 93K222 and 93K223 on its service information site. Look for the exact DFS number on the oil’s data and confirm it appears on the current list.

Grades matter too: 93K222 oils are commonly 15W-40 or 10W-30, while 93K223 oils are usually 10W-30 or 5W-30 at lower HTHS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 93K222 oil in an engine factory filled with 93K223?

Check Detroit’s current requirements for your engine. Detroit publishes which DFS lists apply to each engine family.

What was DFS 93K218?

It was Detroit’s specification for API CJ-4 oils, which preceded the CK-4 and FA-4 categories.
