What is JASO MB? Scooter oil friction category explained

JASO MB is the low-friction motorcycle oil category for scooters and bikes without a wet clutch in the engine oil. Learn when MB applies and when it doesn’t.

Short answer

JASO MB is the low-friction category in the JASO T903 four-stroke motorcycle oil standard. It is meant for scooters and other motorcycles with automatic transmissions where the clutch does not run in the engine oil. MB oils are not intended for wet-clutch motorcycles that call for JASO MA, MA1 or MA2.

Where MB fits in JASO T903

JASO T903 sorts four-stroke motorcycle oils using a clutch friction test that reports dynamic friction, static friction and stop time. Oils in the higher band are MA (with MA1 and MA2 sub-grades). Oils that fall in the lower band on those indices are classified MB.

The low friction result usually reflects the use of friction modifiers, the same family of additives used in many fuel-economy car oils. In an engine with no clutch in the oil, lower friction can reduce internal drag.

Which machines call for MB

Typical MB applications are scooters with a belt-driven continuously variable transmission and a dry centrifugal clutch housed separately from the engine oil. Because the oil never touches the drive clutch, wet-clutch friction is not a concern there.

Some scooter makers specify MB, some specify MA, and some list an automotive API category instead. The owner’s manual is the authority, and it may also list a specific viscosity such as 10W-30 or 10W-40.

Why MB and MA are not interchangeable

A wet-clutch motorcycle needs the clutch plates to grip through the engine oil. An MB oil sits below the MA friction range by definition, so using it in a wet-clutch bike risks clutch slip. Going the other way, an MA oil in a scooter that specifies MB will not have the friction-modifier characteristics the maker chose.

Look for the category printed with the JASO mark on the bottle and in the product data, and match it to the manual rather than to the bike’s appearance or engine size.

Checking the label

Registered oils show the JASO mark with the category and a registration number, and they appear on JASO’s published list of registered oils. Oils that only state they “meet” MB are making the marketer’s own claim. Either way, the viscosity grade is a separate requirement you also need to match.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use JASO MB oil in my motorcycle?

Only if the manual specifies MB. Most manual-transmission motorcycles with a wet clutch call for JASO MA, MA1 or MA2 instead.

Is a scooter oil the same as JASO MB?

Not always. Some scooter oils are rated MA and some MB. Read the category on the label and compare it with the scooter’s manual.

Does JASO MB apply to two-stroke scooters?

No. JASO MB is a four-stroke engine oil category. Two-stroke oils use JASO M345 grades such as FC and FD.
