Short answer
UDT and Super UDT2 are Kubota’s own tractor transmission-hydraulic fluids. Kubota recommends them for the hydraulic, final drive, transmission, differential and wet brake systems of its tractors, and states that UDT and Super UDT2 are fully interchangeable with each other and with the older Super UDT. They are Kubota products rather than an industry standard, so other brands that say “for UDT applications” are making their own claim.
A brand name used like a spec
Kubota tractor manuals typically list Kubota UDT or Super UDT2 by name for the transmission and hydraulic system rather than citing a numbered standard. Over time “UDT” has become shorthand for the fluid type, and many universal tractor fluids now say they are suitable where UDT is specified.
UDT, Super UDT and Super UDT2
Kubota currently offers standard UDT and Super UDT2. Kubota describes Super UDT2 as offering improved transmission performance and protection at high and low operating temperatures, and says it is fully interchangeable with standard UDT and the earlier Super UDT, so the fluids can be mixed when topping off.
For owners, the practical choice is between Kubota’s two current fluids or a non-Kubota fluid that claims suitability. Kubota’s own interchangeability statement applies to its fluids, not to other brands.
Why the right fluid matters in a shared sump
On most Kubota tractors, one reservoir feeds the hydraulics, the transmission, the differential, the final drives and the wet brakes. The fluid has to behave as a hydraulic oil, a gear oil and a friction fluid at once. A fluid that is wrong for the wet brakes, for example, can cause chatter or poor braking even if the hydraulics seem fine.
Cold-start behavior also differs between fluids, which matters for tractors used for snow removal or winter chores.
Choosing a fluid for a Kubota
Start with the operator’s manual, which names the fluid and the capacity for each system. Some Kubota machines, such as zero-turn mowers and compact excavators, have different requirements from the tractors, so check that the manual matches the machine.
If you use a non-Kubota fluid, read its current product data to see exactly how it describes UDT suitability, and keep that with your maintenance records.
Frequently asked questions
Can I mix Kubota UDT and Super UDT2?
Kubota states the two are fully interchangeable, along with the older Super UDT.
Is “UDT compatible” the same as Kubota UDT?
No. It is the supplier’s statement that its fluid suits UDT applications. Kubota’s interchangeability statement covers its own fluids.
