Short answer

MB 229.5, 229.51 and 229.52 are Mercedes-Benz Sheets on Operating Fluids that define engine oil approvals. MB 229.5 is a full-ash approval for many passenger car and van engines, while 229.51 and 229.52 are low-SAPS approvals intended for engines with exhaust aftertreatment such as diesel particulate filters. Mercedes approves specific products to each sheet and publishes the lists.

How Mercedes-Benz oil approvals work

Mercedes-Benz publishes its requirements as numbered Sheets on Operating Fluids. An oil maker submits a product for testing, and approved products are listed by name in Mercedes’ online operating fluids database.

The first part of the number, 229, identifies passenger car and van engine oils. The digits after the point identify the particular sheet, and higher numbers do not always mean an approval covers every lower one.

MB 229.5

MB 229.5 is an energy-conserving, long-drain approval for specified passenger car and van engines. It is not a low-SAPS sheet, which means oils approved to it can have higher ash and phosphorus levels than the 229.51 and 229.52 oils.

It commonly appears on 0W-40 and 5W-40 European oils, and the manual for each engine states whether it is acceptable.

MB 229.51 and MB 229.52

MB 229.51 is a low-SAPS approval, developed for diesel engines with particulate filters and also used for some gasoline engines where Mercedes prescribes it. Lower ash protects the filter from ash buildup that cannot be cleaned out by regeneration.

MB 229.52 is a further low-SAPS sheet with stricter requirements than 229.51, including improved fuel economy targets. It is commonly listed for Mercedes diesels with particulate filters and other aftertreatment-equipped engines. Mercedes treats 229.52 as its own approval rather than a blanket replacement for every older 229 sheet.

Picking the right sheet

Check the owner’s manual or Mercedes service information for the sheet numbers your engine accepts. Many manuals list several in order of preference.

Do not use a 229.5-only oil in a diesel that requires 229.51 or 229.52. The low-SAPS requirement exists to protect the particulate filter.

Frequently asked questions

Is MB 229.5 low SAPS?
