VW 502 00 (gasoline) and VW 505 00 / 505 01 (diesel) are older Volkswagen Group oil standards. See what they cover and how they relate to VW 504 00/507 00.

Short answer

VW 502 00 is a Volkswagen Group oil standard for gasoline engines, and VW 505 00 is its diesel counterpart for fixed-interval service. VW 505 01 is a separate diesel standard tied to unit-injector (Pumpe Düse) TDI engines. These standards predate the low-ash VW 504 00/507 00 pair and still appear in manuals for many older VW, Audi, SEAT and Škoda vehicles.

VW 502 00 for gasoline engines

VW 502 00 sits above the earlier VW 501 01 level and was widely specified for VW Group gasoline engines, including many direct-injection and turbocharged engines such as the 2.0T used in the 2000s.

It is a fixed-interval standard rather than a long-life one, so cars specifying 502 00 generally followed time or distance service schedules rather than the variable LongLife intervals of later standards.

VW 505 00 and VW 505 01 for diesels

VW 505 00 covers many older VW Group diesel engines on fixed service intervals. VW 505 01 is a distinct standard developed for engines with unit-injector (Pumpe Düse) fuel systems, which place particular demands on the oil.

The two are not interchangeable: an oil approved only to 505 00 should not be used where 505 01 is specified. VW Group bulletins have listed 502 00, 505 00 and 505 01 together for gasoline and diesel cars sold in the US.

How they relate to VW 504 00/507 00

VW 504 00 (gasoline) and VW 507 00 (diesel) were introduced later as the LongLife III pair with reduced ash, phosphorus and sulfur. In many applications a 504 00 or 507 00 oil can be used where the older gasoline or diesel standards were specified, but there are engine-specific exceptions.

Because of those exceptions, the vehicle’s own documentation decides whether a newer standard covers an older requirement. This is especially true for diesel engines with particulate filters or unit injectors.

Checking an oil against these standards

Look for the exact wording “VW 502 00,” “VW 505 00” or “VW 505 01” in the oil’s current approval list, not just a similar viscosity grade. VW Group approvals are issued by Volkswagen for specific formulations.

Many oils carrying these approvals are 5W-40 or 5W-30 grades, but the grade listed in your manual still applies.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a 505 00 oil in a Pumpe Düse TDI that calls for 505 01?

No. VW 505 01 is a separate standard for unit-injector engines. Use an oil approved to 505 01, or one the manual says can substitute for it.

Is VW 502 00 still current?

It remains in manuals for many older gasoline cars, while newer VW Group engines specify standards such as 504 00 or 508 00.
